Is it dangerous to be in the house?
Sewage can carry bacteria and viruses that make people sick. Keep kids, pets and anyone who's pregnant, elderly or has a weak immune system away from it. Don't walk through it barefoot. Wash your hands with soap after touching anything it reached. Rooms it didn't reach can usually stay in use once the area is closed off. We'll make that call when we see it.
Why can't I run any water?
Every drain in the house empties into the same line. If that line is blocked, water from a shower, the dishwasher or a flush upstairs has nowhere to go except back out the lowest drain, right where the mess already is. Hold off until a plumber clears it.
What has to be thrown away?
Porous materials that touched sewage have to go. That means carpet and pad, the bottom of the drywall, most baseboards, particleboard cabinet bases, upholstered furniture and mattresses. Sewage soaks into them and can't be cleaned back out. Hard surfaces like tile, sealed concrete, metal and glass can be cleaned and disinfected.
Can't you just shampoo the carpet?
Not after sewage. Carpet and pad hold contamination deep in the fibers and backing where cleaning doesn't reach. The restoration standard calls for removal. It's the part nobody likes, but it's the answer that protects your family.
Do I call a plumber or you first?
Both. The plumber clears the line and fixes what caused the backup. We clean up what came out of it. We can start removing sewage and wet material while the plumber works, as long as nobody's running water.
How do I know the room is actually clean afterward?
Everything that stays gets cleaned first, then treated with an EPA-registered disinfectant that's left on long enough to work. After that, the structure dries. We check it with a moisture meter before anything new goes in.
How much does it cost? Will insurance pay?

That covers getting the water out, drying the structure and checking it with moisture meters until the readings are back to normal. If drywall, baseboards or flooring had to come out, the repairs are a separate estimate, so you see each part on its own.

How we clean up sewage

Close off the area
We seal the affected rooms with plastic and wear protective gear so sewage doesn't get tracked into the rest of the house.

Remove the sewage
Standing waste and water get extracted and disposed of properly. Solids get picked up before anything else happens.

Tear out the porous materials
Carpet, pad, the bottom of the drywall and anything else that soaked it up comes out and gets bagged on the way to the truck.

Tile, the slab, framing and anything else that stays gets scrubbed. Disinfectant doesn't work well on a dirty surface, so this step can't be skipped.

Dry and rebuild
Dehumidifiers and air movers run until the readings say dry, usually three to five days. Then the walls, baseboards and flooring go back in.

Hard, non-porous surfaces get cleaned, treated with a product that fits the contamination, and left wet long enough for that product to do its job.
Then the structure dries. We check it with readings before anything new goes in.

Can I clean up sewage myself?
