Questions about dehumidifiers after a leak
Most people have run a fan on a wet carpet before. The dehumidifier is the part that's new to them.
I already have fans on it. Isn't that enough?
Fans pull water off the wet surface and push it into the air. If nothing removes that water from the air, it settles into the next cool, dry thing nearby: another wall, the furniture, the closet. Some of it goes right back into the drywall you're trying to dry. Fans speed up evaporation. They don't remove water.
It's the desert. Won't the house dry by itself?
Outside, maybe. Inside, the house is closed up and the AC is running, so the water coming off the carpet and walls stays in the same air. That air gets humid. Drying slows. During monsoon season, the outside air isn't that dry anyway.
Why can't I use the dehumidifier from my garage?
Household units are built to take the edge off a musty room. After a leak, the walls and floor are putting out far more water than one of those can keep up with. It fills its bucket and shuts off, often overnight, while the room stays damp.
Does my air conditioner count as a dehumidifier?
It pulls some moisture out as it cools, and it helps. It isn't built for the load a wet room puts out, and it runs on the thermostat, not on how wet the air is. We still ask you to keep it running normally.
What's the water line coming out of the machine?
That's the water the dehumidifier pulled out of the air, running to a sink, tub or outside. Seeing how much comes out in the first day surprises most people.
