Can I get the water up myself?
Sometimes, yes. If it's clean water from a supply line, it's sitting on tile, and you caught it fast, towels and a shop vac can handle the floor. They won't reach water that has already soaked into carpet pad, under the baseboards or into the bottom of the drywall.
How do I know if it got into the walls?
Paint that bubbles, baseboards that swell or pull away, drywall that feels soft near the floor, a musty smell a day or two later. By the time you see those, it's been in there a while. A moisture meter finds it before any of that shows up.
Won't a few fans dry it out?
Fans move air across the surface. Without a dehumidifier running with them, the moisture they lift can drift into the next room and settle into the drywall there. The floor may feel dry on top while the pad underneath stays wet.
What if it came from a toilet or a drain?
Don't vacuum that up yourself. Water from a drain or an overflowing toilet starts dirty, and if it sits, it can turn into Category 3, the grossly contaminated kind. Keep kids and pets out of it and call us.
