Quality 1st Restoration home

Soot Removal in Henderson, NV

Don't wipe it. Soot removal starts dry, with HEPA vacuums and dry chemical sponges that lift the loose particles. Only after that do we wash the film underneath with a cleaner matched to what burned. Wiping first is what turns a gray haze into a permanent stain.

In a Henderson home it's often a stovetop fire, a burned-out appliance, or a furnace pushing soot through the registers. Kitchen soot, plastic soot and furnace soot each behave differently. That's where the cleaning plan starts.

What people usually ask about soot

Half the time, someone has already tried a sponge and it didn't go well.

I wiped it and it got worse. What happened?

It happens a lot. A damp rag or a household cleaner pushes fine soot into flat paint and grout, and oily soot turns into long gray streaks. It was on the surface. Now it's in it. Stop wiping and leave the rest for us.

Why is there a sticky film but hardly any black?

That's probably protein residue from burned food. A pot left on the stove can coat a kitchen in a thin yellow-brown film you barely see but can smell everywhere. It's greasy, it clings to cabinets and paint, and it needs a degreasing cleaner. Plain water won't touch it.

Black soot came out of my vents. Is that a fire?

It could be the furnace. A heater that's burning dirty or misfiring can push soot through the ducts and out the registers, and it lands in streaks around every vent in the house. Shut the system off, have an HVAC tech look at the furnace, and call us for the cleanup.

Can soot damage things if it just sits there?

Yes. Soot is acidic. Over time it can etch glass, pit metal fixtures and yellow plastics and grout. The longer it stays, the more likely a surface needs refinishing instead of cleaning.

Is soot bad to breathe?

The particles are very fine and they get stirred up every time someone walks through. Anyone with asthma, small kids or older relatives should stay out of the sooty rooms until they're cleaned. We run HEPA air filtration while we work so we don't just move it to another room.

How much does it cost? Will insurance pay?

We don't quote fire damage over the phone. Smoke gets into attics, closets and ductwork you can't see from the doorway, so the price has to come from an on-site walk-through. The estimate breaks board-up, cleaning, odor work, pack-out and rebuild into separate lines.

For soot removal, the price follows the residue and the surfaces. Dry soot on painted walls is the lighter end. Greasy protein film on a kitchen full of cabinets, or oily plastic soot that's already been smeared, takes longer. Flat paint and popcorn ceilings that can't be cleaned add sealing and repainting.

Insurance or self-pay, you decide

Your carrier decides what the policy pays. Our job is the record: we photograph the damage before anything gets cleaned or hauled out, so the proof is still there after the debris is gone.

Paying yourself? Ask about the self-pay discount. The estimate is free, and you see the price before we start.

How we remove soot

  1. 1

    Figure out what burned

Grease from a stovetop, plastic from an appliance, wood and paper, or a furnace problem. Each one leaves a different residue, and the cleaning method has to match it.

  2. 2

    Set up air filtration

HEPA air scrubbers run before we touch anything and stay on the whole time. Every surface we clean puts some soot back in the air. The filtration catches it.

  3. 3

Take the loose soot off dry

Dry, powdery soot comes off first with HEPA vacuums and dry chemical sponges, before any liquid. Skipping this step is exactly how a light layer turns into a stain.

  4. 4

    Wash what's left

Oily and protein residues get degreasing cleaners matched to the surface. Cabinets, trim, glass and fixtures each get their own approach so finishes aren't dulled.

  5. 5

Check it in daylight and by touch

We look at the cleaned walls at an angle and wipe them with a white cloth. If the cloth comes back gray, that section isn't done.

The wrong cleaner can set soot into the surface.

Plastic soot smears the moment you rub it with something wet. Greasy kitchen film barely notices plain water. Loose dry soot presses into flat paint if you scrub before you vacuum.

So before cleaning a wall, we test a small spot and check what comes off on the sponge. That tells us which method the rest of the room gets.

What's included

What our soot cleanup covers, and the work that belongs to someone else.

What we do

  • Identifying the soot type and testing a spot before cleaning
  • HEPA air filtration for the entire time we're working
  • Dry soot removal with HEPA vacuums and dry chemical sponges
  • Degreasing and washing walls, cabinets, trim and fixtures
  • Cleaning soot from vent covers and registers
  • Sealing primer and paint where cleaning can't bring a surface back

What we don't do

  • Diagnosing or repairing the furnace. That's an HVAC contractor, and it should happen before the heat goes back on.
  • Appliance or electrical repair after a kitchen fire.
  • Removing the smell from framing and ducts. That's our odor removal service, and it usually follows soot cleaning.

Soot removal questions

What's the right way to do soot removal on walls?

Dry first, wet second. Vacuum and dry-sponge the loose soot before anything damp touches it, then clean the remaining film with a cleaner that suits the residue. Start with a wet rag and you'll usually set the stain.

What's the difference between protein soot and synthetic soot?

Protein soot comes from burned food. It's a thin, greasy film that's hard to see and smells strong. Synthetic soot comes from burning plastics, foam and fabrics. It's black, oily and smears badly if you rub it.

Can everything with soot on it be cleaned?

Most hard surfaces can: tile, sealed countertops, glass, metal, most cabinets. Flat paint and textured ceilings often need a sealing primer and fresh paint after cleaning. Some porous things, like certain lampshades and unfinished wood, may not come back.

How much does soot removal cost?

It depends on how much surface area is covered, what kind of residue it is and how many belongings need cleaning. Greasy protein residue on a lot of cabinetry takes longer than light dry soot on a few walls. We look at it first and give you a free estimate.

Does insurance pay for soot cleanup from a furnace puff-back?

A sudden puff-back is often reviewed like other sudden smoke damage, but your carrier decides. Take photos of the registers and walls before anyone cleans, and keep the HVAC tech's report on what failed. We'll add our photos and the cleaning scope.

Clear work, clean documentation, no mystery in the middle.

For Soot Removal, you should be able to see what we found and what we did about it. That's what the paperwork is for.

When we leave, you should have a plain explanation of the work and paperwork that still makes sense weeks later if an adjuster asks.

Certified standards

IICRC-certified technicians work to the published industry standards instead of judging the job by how it looks.

Claim-ready documentation

Photos and scope notes are collected as the work moves, so you and your adjuster can see what changed and why.

Cleaning matched to the soot

Protein soot from a kitchen fire and synthetic soot from burning plastics need different methods. We test first so we don't smear residue deeper into the surface.

One accountable plan

The emergency work and the rebuild stay under one plan, so nothing falls into the gap between two contractors.

Local loss experience

Smoke moves through attics, closets and ductwork. We check those spaces before we price the job, not halfway through it.

What we tell you before work expands

What needs action now

What needs attention today and what can wait. If part of it belongs to a plumber or roofer, we say so.

What should stay closed

We don't open finished walls or ceilings until the readings and the access tell us it's worth it.

What happens next

Stabilize first. Repair decisions come after the building is under control.
