Quality 1st Restoration home

Smoke Damage Restoration in Henderson, NV

If the house didn't burn but smoke got everywhere, smoke damage restoration is how you get it back. We find every place the residue landed, clean it off the walls and your belongings, clean the ducts it traveled through, and then treat the smell that's left.

Around Henderson it's often a stovetop fire, a garage fire that never got past the garage, or a fire next door in a townhome row. If the AC was running, the smoke reached rooms on the far side of the house too.

Smoke cleanup is not structural fire repair.

This page covers smoke residue, belongings that took on smoke, and the smell. If the fire also burned drywall or framing, broke windows, left hose water behind, or means rebuilding, start with our fire damage restoration service.

The questions people ask when the smoke clears

Most callers are standing in a house that looks fine from the driveway and smells awful inside.

Nothing burned. Why does it look this bad?

A pan fire can fill a house with smoke before you find the lid. That smoke carries fine soot and oily residue. It lands on everything it touches: ceilings, the tops of cabinets, window blinds, the inside of closets. The gray film you're seeing is residue, and most of it cleans off with the right method.

It was my neighbor's fire, not mine. Why is my house affected?

In townhomes, condos and houses built close together, smoke can get in through shared attics, open windows, gaps around doors and the outdoor unit of your AC. It happens more than people expect. We check where it came in so the claim describes the damage correctly.

Is it safe to stay here with the smell?

Smoke residue irritates a lot of people's lungs and eyes. Kids, older family members and anyone with asthma usually feel it first. If breathing feels off, stay somewhere else for a few nights and let us get the worst of it cleaned first. Your family's health comes before the schedule.

Can I just wash the walls and repaint?

Painting over smoke residue usually brings the stain and the smell back through the new coat. And scrubbing soot with a wet sponge tends to smear it into the paint. The residue has to come off first. Sometimes the wall also needs a sealing primer before paint.

Are my clothes and couch ruined?

Usually not. Clothing, bedding and drapes often clean up well. Upholstery depends on the fabric and how much smoke it held. Electronics should stay unplugged until someone checks them, because residue inside them can cause problems when they power back on.

How much does it cost? Will insurance pay?

We don't quote fire damage over the phone. Smoke gets into attics, closets and ductwork you can't see from the doorway, so the price has to come from an on-site walk-through. The estimate breaks board-up, cleaning, odor work, pack-out and rebuild into separate lines.

On a smoke-only job, the price follows how far the smoke traveled. One kitchen and a hallway is a short cleaning job. Smoke that went through the ducts into every bedroom means more rooms, more belongings to clean and duct work on top. Greasy kitchen residue also takes more labor per wall than light, dry soot.

Insurance or self-pay, you decide

Your carrier decides what the policy pays. Our job is the record: we photograph the damage before anything gets cleaned or hauled out, so the proof is still there after the debris is gone.

How we clean up smoke damage

  1. 1

    Find where the smoke went

We walk every room with you, open closets and cabinets, look at the tops of doors and check the return vents and filter. Smoke leaves a trail. It's usually farther than the room where the fire started.

  2. 2

    Photograph it before cleaning

Residue on the ceiling and inside cabinets is hard to prove once it's gone. The photos go into the file for your carrier before anyone wipes a surface.

  3. 3

Get the loose soot off first

Dry residue gets HEPA-vacuumed and dry-sponged before any liquid touches it. That order keeps it from turning into streaks on the paint.

  4. 4

    Wash the surfaces

Walls, ceilings, cabinets and hard furniture get cleaned with products chosen for the residue type. Greasy kitchen residue needs something different from the sticky black soot that burned plastic leaves.

  5. 5

    Clean the HVAC side

The system that was running during the fire moved smoke through every duct. Vents and registers get cleaned and the filter gets replaced so the air handler doesn't blow residue back into clean rooms.

  6. 6

Treat the odor and check it

Once the surfaces are clean, deodorization handles the smell that's soaked into drywall and fabric. We walk it again with you before we call it done.

Kitchen and living area with visible smoke staining after a fire

Different materials need different cleaning.

Painted walls, cabinet fronts and countertops get cleaned in place. Clothes and drapes usually go out for cleaning. Electronics get checked for residue before anyone plugs them back in.

We keep a list of what was cleaned, what was replaced and what left the house, so you and your adjuster are looking at the same record.

What's included

Here's what a smoke cleanup covers with us, and where it stops.

What we do

  • A walk-through of every room, closet and the attic access
  • Photos of the residue before any cleaning
  • Dry soot removal, then washing the walls and cabinets
  • Cleaning clothing, soft goods and hard belongings, or packing them out to clean
  • Cleaning vents and registers and changing the HVAC filter
  • Odor treatment after the surfaces are clean
  • Sealing primer and paint where residue has stained the wall

What we don't do

  • Repairing or replacing the AC unit or furnace. That's an HVAC contractor.
  • Electrical or appliance repair after a kitchen fire. That's an electrician or appliance tech.
  • Rebuilding burned walls or framing. That's our fire damage restoration service.

Smoke damage questions

What does smoke damage restoration involve?

Finding every surface the smoke reached, removing the residue with the method that fits it, cleaning belongings and the duct system, and then treating the leftover odor. Painting only happens after the residue is gone, if it's needed at all.

How much does smoke damage cleanup cost?

It's priced after a walk-through, because the cost depends on how many rooms the smoke reached and how many belongings need cleaning. The walk-through is free. If you're paying yourself, ask about the self-pay discount.

Does homeowners insurance cover smoke damage without a fire in my home?

Smoke from a sudden fire, including a neighbor's, is often part of a homeowners policy. Your carrier makes that decision, not us. What we can do is photograph and write up the damage so the adjuster sees the same thing we see.

How long does smoke smell last after a kitchen fire?

If the residue stays on the surfaces, the smell can hang on for a long time and come back on hot days. Once the residue is cleaned off and the odor in porous materials is treated, it goes away and stays away.

Should I run my AC after a smoke incident?

Change the filter first. If the system was running during the fire, have the ducts looked at before running it hard. Otherwise it keeps moving residue from the ducts into rooms you've already cleaned.

Clear work, clean documentation, no mystery in the middle.

For Smoke Damage Restoration, you should be able to see what we found and what we did about it. That's what the paperwork is for.

When we leave, you should have a plain explanation of the work and paperwork that still makes sense weeks later if an adjuster asks.

Certified standards

IICRC-certified technicians work to the published industry standards instead of judging the job by how it looks.

Claim-ready documentation

Photos and scope notes are collected as the work moves, so you and your adjuster can see what changed and why.

Cleaning matched to the soot

Protein soot from a kitchen fire and synthetic soot from burning plastics need different methods. We test first so we don't smear residue deeper into the surface.

One accountable plan

The emergency work and the rebuild stay under one plan, so nothing falls into the gap between two contractors.

Local loss experience

Smoke moves through attics, closets and ductwork. We check those spaces before we price the job, not halfway through it.

What we tell you before work expands

What needs action now

What needs attention today and what can wait. If part of it belongs to a plumber or roofer, we say so.

What should stay closed

We don't open finished walls or ceilings until the readings and the access tell us it's worth it.

What happens next

Stabilize first. Repair decisions come after the building is under control.
