When the smell just won't go away
By the time most people call about an odor, they've already tried the spray, the candles and the open windows.
We cleaned everything. Why does it still smell?
Because the smell usually isn't in the air. It's in something: smoke residue in the drywall paper, sewage soaked into carpet pad, damp insulation behind a baseboard. Open a window and the air clears for a bit. Then the source puts the odor back.
Why didn't air fresheners or candles work?
They cover the smell for a while and add another scent on top. When they wear off, the original odor is still there. Sometimes now it's smoke and perfume, which is worse.
Can we just paint over it?
Regular paint over smoke residue tends to let the odor and the yellow stain come back through, especially when the house heats up in summer. If a wall is cleaned properly first, an odor-sealing primer can lock in what's left. Then it's safe to paint.
