Kitchen walls and ceiling opened for drying in West Sahara

We got called out for a wet kitchen in a West Sahara home, where the lower walls behind the cabinets and a section of ceiling had to come open.

Above the ceiling opening we took moisture readings on the joists and subfloor, and in the kitchen the lower cabinets came out so the drywall could be cut back to the studs and plumbing. Containment with a zipper door went up before the ceiling or cabinets were opened, so if mold was behind them it would stay in the kitchen. The drying equipment then ran inside that containment.

What we did

  1. 1 Hung plastic containment with a zipper door around the work area before anything was opened, in case there was mold behind the ceiling or cabinets.
  2. 2 Cut open a section of ceiling and took moisture readings on the joists and subfloor above it.
  3. 3 Removed the lower kitchen cabinets and cut the drywall back to the studs and plumbing.
  4. 4 Ran a HEPA air scrubber to filter dust and airborne particles like mold spores, with the air mover pushing air around the kitchen in a circle and the dehumidifier in the middle pulling the moisture out.
