Questions people ask before they call us

Most people have never had to deal with this before. Here's what they usually want to know.

Does this actually count as a biohazard?

If it came out of a body or a sewer line, treat it as one. That means blood, vomit, urine and feces, sewage that backed up into the house, heavy animal waste in a garage or attic, and used needles. A small spill you can wipe off a sealed countertop is usually fine to handle yourself with gloves. Anything that soaked into carpet, a mattress or drywall is past that point.

Can't I just clean it with bleach?

Bleach can work on a hard, sealed surface when it's mixed at the right strength and left wet long enough. It doesn't reach what soaked into carpet pad, the backing of a rug or the paper face of drywall. Wiping the top makes the stain disappear. The material underneath stays contaminated, and that's usually where the smell comes back from a few weeks later.

Is it safe to be in the house right now?

Keep kids and pets out of the room and shut the door. Don't vacuum it. Don't run a fan at it. Don't pick up needles by hand. The rest of the house is normally fine to use while you wait for us.

Will my neighbors know what happened?

They don't have to. Ask for an unmarked vehicle and we'll send one when we can. Our crew doesn't discuss the job on the driveway, and we set the schedule around what works for you.

What happens to the things that get removed?

Porous materials that took on contamination get bagged, sealed and disposed of as biohazard waste, not dropped in your trash can. Before anything leaves, we list it and photograph it so you and your carrier have a record of what went.

How much does it cost? Will insurance pay?

Biohazard work is priced on site. The size of the affected area, what soaked into porous materials, and how much has to be removed and disposed of set the number.

For general biohazard work, the biggest factor is whether the contamination stayed on a hard surface or soaked into something. Sealed tile and countertops get cleaned. Carpet, pad, drywall and subfloor have to be cut out, bagged and hauled away. That's where the hours and disposal costs add up.

How a biohazard cleanup goes

  1. 1

    A short walk-through

We look at the affected area with you, or without you if you'd rather not see it again. Then we tell you what has to come out and what can be cleaned, and we give you a price before anything starts.

  2. 2

    Close off the room

Plastic sheeting and taped doorways keep the work from spreading into hallways and other rooms. The crew wears protective gear the whole time they're inside.

  3. 3

Take out what can't be saved

Carpet and pad, stained drywall, mattresses, upholstered pieces and anything else that absorbed contamination gets cut out, bagged and sealed right there in the room.

  4. 4

    Clean, then disinfect

Hard surfaces get scrubbed first, because disinfectant can't work through a film of residue. Then an EPA-registered disinfectant goes on and stays wet for the full time its label requires.

  5. 5

Check it and hand it back

We inspect every surface that stayed, deal with any odor, and photograph the finished room. If drywall or flooring came out, we can put it back.

Removal of contaminated materials in a Henderson biohazard cleanup

If it soaked in, it comes out. If it's sealed, we can clean it.

Carpet and pad, unsealed wood, drywall and fabric hold onto whatever gets into them, and no amount of spraying reaches the bottom. Those get cut out past the stained area and disposed of as biohazard waste.

Tile, sealed stone, metal, glass and finished countertops don't absorb it. They get cleaned, then disinfected, then checked before we call the room done. The remove-or-clean decision is the part we explain before we start.

What's included

Here's what we handle on a biohazard job, and where other people take over.

What we do

  • A walk-through and written estimate, free
  • Containment so the rest of the house stays clean
  • Removing contaminated carpet, drywall, furniture and other porous items
  • Bagging and disposal as biohazard waste
  • Cleaning and disinfecting every hard surface that stays
  • Odor treatment once the source is gone
  • Photos and a scope for your carrier, landlord or property manager
  • Rebuilding drywall and flooring we removed, if you want us to

What we don't do

  • Fixing the sewer line or plumbing that caused a backup. That's a plumber.
  • Pest removal or trapping live animals. Call pest control first.
  • Medical, legal or police matters. We start after those are finished.

Biohazard cleanup questions

What does biohazard cleanup include?

It includes removing porous materials that are contaminated, cleaning and disinfecting the hard surfaces that stay, disposing of the waste properly, and treating the odor. If walls or floors had to come out, we can rebuild them too.

How much does biohazard cleanup cost?

It's priced after we see it, and the estimate is free. A small spot on tile is a short job. A room where fluids got into the carpet, subfloor and the bottom of the wall means a lot more removal and disposal, and that's what drives the number up.

Will homeowners insurance pay for biohazard cleanup?

Sometimes. Some policies cover it, some don't, and it depends on what caused it. Your carrier makes that decision. We give you photos, a written scope and an itemized estimate you can send them.

Can I clean up blood myself?

A few drops on a sealed surface, yes, with disposable gloves and a proper disinfectant. Once blood has soaked into fabric, carpet or wood, or there's more than you can wipe in one pass, call a professional. You won't reach what's underneath, and you'd be handling it without protection.

What should I do with needles I found?

Leave them where they are and keep people away from that spot. Don't try to recap them or drop them in household trash. We pick them up with tools, put them in a sharps container, and check the rest of the area for more.

Clear work, clean documentation, no mystery in the middle.

For Biohazard Cleanup, you should be able to see what we found and what we did about it. That's what the paperwork is for.

When we leave, you should have a plain explanation of the work and paperwork that still makes sense weeks later if an adjuster asks.

Certified standards

IICRC-certified technicians work to the published industry standards instead of judging the job by how it looks.

Claim-ready documentation

Photos and scope notes are collected as the work moves, so you and your adjuster can see what changed and why.

Discreet and thorough

We arrive as quietly as the job allows, remove contaminated material for proper disposal, then clean and check the surfaces before we call it done.

One accountable plan

The emergency work and the rebuild stay under one plan, so nothing falls into the gap between two contractors.

Local loss experience

These calls come on hard days. We explain each step before we take it and leave room for the family to decide.

What we tell you before work expands

What needs action now

What needs attention today and what can wait. If part of it belongs to a plumber or roofer, we say so.

What should stay closed

We don't open finished walls or ceilings until the readings and the access tell us it's worth it.

What happens next

Stabilize first. Repair decisions come after the building is under control.
